Sandburg Softball Picks Up Split at Bryant & Stratton

The Carl Sandburg College softball team dropped a close contest before winning in big fashion Monday afternoon in a nonconference doubleheader at Bryant & Stratton. The Chargers (15-25) dropped the opener 5-4 but used a pair of big innings in Game 2 to win 12-4 in five innings.

Key Moment
The Chargers grabbed a 3-2 advantage in the top of the second on a two-run homer from Lizzie Malcolm (Milan, Ill./Alleman), but the Bobcats answered with a pair of runs to regain the lead for good behind two hits and an error. 

Sandburg Star of the Game
Madison Benge (Stronghurst, Ill./West Central) had a pair of hits, scored twice, homered in the sixth and stole a base to lead the Chargers offense.

  • Sandburg jumped to a 5-0 lead in a first inning that included RBI hits from Abigail Stranger (Abingdon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) and Kylie Stineman (New Boston, Ill./Mercer County).
  • Bryant & Stratton closed within 5-4 before the Chargers put up a seven-run fourth. The first five batters reached and scored for Sandburg, and Jada Fletcher (Oquawka, Ill./West Central) punctuated the rally with a two-run homer to left.

Sandburg Star of the Game
Stineman went 2 for 3 at the dish with a double, run scored and two RBIs while also earning a complete-game victory in the circle. She struck out one and didn’t issue a walk, winning for the fourth time in her last five decisions.
